Equipment leasing: an ally of business productivity

Investing in innovation and increasing productivity? A goal shared by all companies, whatever the size. Equipment leasing, suitable for all types of companies, is a particularly effective solution in supporting this development. How? Luca Viglione, Business Activation & Tracking Coordinator at Banca Ifis, tells us.

What are the advantages of leasing equipment rather than buying it?

Equipment leasing, compared to direct purchase, offers several advantages for Italian companies. It preserves the company’s liquidity, avoiding a high initial outlay for the purchase of the asset, instead limiting it to an advance payment. This advantage also applies to the VAT portion. By dividing up the remainder of the payments into periodic instalments, it makes it possible:

  • to invest in other projects or meet more urgent cash needs
  • to modulate the costs of the asset in the income statement; according to the needs of the entrepreneur.

At the end of the contract, it then gives the choice between taking permanent possession of the asset by exercising the predetermined purchase option or returning the asset to the leasing company.

Finally, leasing is the solution that simplifies administrative management and can facilitate access to both national and regional tax benefits.

How does leasing support the digital innovation of companies?

Thanks to the possibility of replacing the asset at the end of the contract, companies can ensure they always have the latest and best performing technology, thereby increasing competitiveness.
It is also easier to comply with new safety and environmental regulations and avoid being tied to obsolete machinery.

Leasing is confirmed as the preferred product for SMEs to access forms of tax relief. In the period January-October 2024, 70,7% of the financing resulting from the ‘Tecno Sabatini’ refers to leasing operations (2,5 billion out of 3,5 in total) and the remaining 30% to bank financing (Source: Assilea).

In short, equipment leasing, combined with Sabatini 4.0 subsidies, offers a unique opportunity for Italian companies to invest in technological innovation, reducing costs and improving productivity.

In the case of leasing, who maintains the asset?

In leasing, the user of the asset is responsible for its maintenance normally through specific agreements with the supplier of the asset or specialised companies. This responsibility is also specified in the leasing agreement drawn up between the lessor and lessee.
